about
In January of 2021, I was invited by the Bushwick Book Club of Seattle to compose and perform an original song based on Prince's memoir, The Beautiful Ones. I was inspired by the quote, "I want to tell people to create. Just start by creating your day. Then create your life."
I took these words to heart, and created my most ambitious solo project yet. Everything you see and hear was written, performed, recorded, and edited by me, in my own home. Please enjoy this heartfelt tribute to my ultimate music hero. Also, if you haven't already read his book, I highly recommend it to any Prince fan!
All proceeds from the sale of this track will be donated to the Bushwick Book Club's STYLE program (Songwriting Through Youth Literature Education). Their mission statement is "Igniting students passion for literature through collaborative songwriting education", which is a mission that I'm sure Prince would stand behind. You can read more about the program at www.learningwithstyle.com.
lyrics
When I was nine,
I had never seen a man so fine
Singing on TV
Offering diamonds and pearls to me
Little did I know,
He was once a shy kid like me
When he felt alone
Music was the remedy
I had a dream about him later than night
I had no idea that he would change my life
Chorus:
He was extraordinary
Larger than life
But he didn't become a prince over night
He followed his own path, and he left some great advice:
Just start by creating your day, and create your life
When I was 13,
That beautiful man was my everything
Though I couldn't say his name
I truly adored him just the same
The other kids didn't understand
Why I was crazy about that man
It just wasn't cool
So I was the weird one too
Even Prince has his own insecurities
But he showed me how to let music set me free
Chorus
The years flew by
I can't count all the cash I spent
On concerts and merchandise
But I would gladly do it all again
He was my teacher and my muse
Class followed wherever he was
He taught about music and life
And heartbreak, and sex, and love
How can you miss someone you've never met
So many questions, so many regrets
I found comfort in the pages he left behind
To soothe my broken heart and ease my mind
Chorus
Just start by creating your day
Just one single day
Oh how I wish I could hear him say
Create your life!
